First of all being aware of what you want is absolutley necessary.  Being aware that you will be accomplishing a whole lot more is also important.  When I began my goal was A.  I got B, C, D and E too.  Some of that happened at the same time I was trying to get psychic, some of it happened before.

To explain more fully these are the things I had to learn about first:

  • I had to learn how to write.
  • I had to learn how to draw.
  • I had to learn how to sort of play the piano.
  • I had to come to grips with the fact that I had emotional growth to do.
  • I came to know self help books.
  • I had to let go of some life-long held beliefs and embrace new ones.
  • I had to grow up some more.

This was not a journey that lasted 3 months.  All of the things I needed to pay attention to and explore happened over a period of a few years.  I’m still working on some of them.

Learn How To Write

Keep a journal.  Very necessary for you to express yourself and to work through all the growing stuff that will happen to you as you awaken your psychic senses.  This isn’t something for posterity or to share with anybody.  It is you standing on a soap box and complaining about your treatment at the store today.  It is you whining and crying.  It is you pondering.  It is your deepest thoughts.  It is your most frivolous imaginings.  Just write.  Keeping a journal, whether it is handwritten in a notebook or word processing files on your computer, will help you to make sense of your world and begin paying attention to yourself which will help you to pay attention to the psychic stuff that will be happening to you.

If you need some help with it you might investigate Julia Camerons work.  She wrote, "The Artist's Way: A Spiritual Path to Higher Creativity" among lots of other books.  It's a guided journey using journaling to awaken your creativity.  This book was a huge help for me.  You can find lots of more assistance at: www.theartistsway.com

Learn How To Draw

Drawing requires you to see things differently than you normally do.  You still use your eyes, but somehow there is a shift.  The shift you make from normal vision to the way an artist sees is important in your quest to awaken your psychic senses.  I used Betty Edward’s book, “Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain”.  Look her up on the internet.  There are websites about it.  There is certainly her book to buy and you can occasionally find classes using her techniques to teach drawing.  I used her book and a class.  I still draw stick figures if somebody asks me to draw something quickly, but if I consciously make the shift I can turn out a credible picture.  Something interesting about this process is that you can’t talk while you are drawing because talking comes from the other side of your brain.  Very interesting process.

Learn How to Play the Piano

It doesn’t really need to be the piano.  You can express yourself in a musical manner with an inexpensive child’s recorder, a harmonica, a guitar, anything really that makes music.  Or, learn to sing.  Or, just sing more.  Hum if you are hesitant about singing.  Again the idea is to allow yourself room and space to express yourself in a different manner than you normally do.  Also, you do not have to become proficient in the playing of the instrument of your choice.  Just enjoy yourself.

Many times when I feel the need to do some introspective, emotional healing work for myself I will set myself down at the piano when nobody is in the house and just bang away at it and somehow I am able to release tension and think more clearly about the stuff that is bothering me.  I don’t really know why it works, but it works for me.  Maybe it will work for you too.

I remember it was several days before I finally learned to channel that I sat at my piano with tears streaming down my face pounding out what I thought was music and in my heart talking to my guide (who at that point I didn’t figure was talking to me) and I felt a definite connection to Spirit.  It was just a feeling, but such an expansive feeling.  It doesn’t happen every time I play or sing, just sometimes.

Exploring Emotional Growth

One of my firmly held beliefs when I started my own journey of awakening my psychic senses was that I was perfectly okay emotionally.  In my family if you had something wrong with your head it was something to be ashamed of and wasn’t anything anybody really wanted to hear about.  We were perfectly well adjusted, well mannered people.  Right.  I had a lot of work to do.  That work had to be faced up to.  That work had to start.  It is just about impossible to do a good job awakening your psychic senses if you’ve got emotional healing to do.  What happens is that the impressions you receive with your psychic senses are filtered through who you are; your beliefs and your emotional stability.  Ever gone to a paranoid psychic?  I did.  It is definitely weird.

So, face up to the idea that mostly everybody has some sort of neuroses going on and mostly folks compensate for them and lead okay lives.  Look at the idea that healing of emotional stuff doesn’t happen all at once.  You address your issues a little bit, do some healing, feel better and are more productive and 2 years down the road something triggers more of that same emotional stuff and you start in with the healing process again.

What this process is about is healing as much as you need to in stages and when you are ready you heal some more.  Does this mean that you cannot enjoy your newly awakened psychic senses until after you have completed your emotional healing?  No.  It means, and this is very, very important, that you have made a commitment to your own emotional health and happiness, know how to go about doing some healing, know when to do some more healing and will, for the rest of your life have the tools you need to achieve emotional and psychological peace.

Learn About Self Help Books

I want to recommend my friend Thayer White’s books and websites.  When I balked at reaching out for psychological help the universe sent me his friendship.  This is another thing that will happen to you.  When the student is ready the teacher will appear.  Thayer is a psychotherapist and has written two books.  The first is, “Be Your Own Therapist”.  At the time I was totally resistant to seeing a therapist in the flesh.  His book is absolutely fabulous for peole who want to just do it themselves for awhile.  He feels people can accomplish a great deal of their emotional and psychological growth on their own and that their therapists are your assistants.  Go to: www.psychologyhelp.com/book.htm  to read it for free online.

The second book Thayer wrote is, “Finding Your Soul In the Spirituality Maze”.  This book helps you to sort out all the different ways of approaching your own spiritual journey. This is also an online book and you can read it for free here: www.helpself.com/new-age  Both of these books are available at Amazon.com.

Here are some other books that I used to help me understand and begin to deal with my own emotional and psychological needs:

“Loving What Is” by Byron Katie.  You can also visit her website for even more help: www.thework.com

“Healing Your Inner Child” by John Bradshaw.  His website is: www.johnbradshaw.com  Look there for even more help

Letting Go of Lifelong Held Beliefs and Embracing New Ones

This one is sort of strange.  I didn’t know it was going to happen, but it did.

One was about God.  I used to think God was in charge.  That sort of changed to where we are all in charge.  My idea of God was the boss who would blast folk if they weren’t loving and honest and true.  That changed too.  I still experience a sense of Grace and Spiritual oneness more often than I did before and, to me, that is proof there is a God, a higher self, something more.  It is the moment of peace that I allow to enter.

Another idea was that the questing for psychic awareness was a journey just about psychic awareness.  Surprisingly, it is also about your own spiritual journey.

I used to believe in Heaven and Hell.  Now, it’s just Heaven, or one place instead of two.  I learned people make their own places depending upon what their own belief systems are, like murderers who believe they really did bad go to Hell.  Once there and having suffered appropriately their own guides come along to help them and suggest there is a different place to go to.  In a short space it’s sort of hard to discuss these awesome belief changes, but basically it’s what happened to me.

Also, being dead isn’t so bad.  I was terrified of dying and experiencing all this new stuff has shifted me away from that terror.

The idea of me being in a position to help people was also a terrifying burden.  Here I had greater access to information that might help folks and I felt an obligation to provide that help.  Wrong.  What I’ve ended up is with information that might help somebody, but if they are not interested I don’t have to shove it down their throat.  If they are interested they will ask me.  Simple.  Burden removed.

Anyway, maybe you get the idea of some of the shifts I experienced.  Likely you will have your own shifts.

There were any number of books I read along the way to help with this shifting point of view.  One of them was, “A Course in Miracles”.  This is a three part sort of book.  There is the part with one lesson a day for students and that is the one I read.  I actually only got two thirds of the way through it, but it was enough for my own shift.  You will know whether you need to go all the way through or stop abruptly somewhere along the way.  There is a second part that is a discussion of the lessons and a third part for teachers.  You can buy them in soft back all three bound together or as separate volumes.  This is a channeled book and has been translated into many languages.  Interestingly enough, after I had bit the bullet and gone to a therapist to talk about life in general at our last meeting as I stood out in the hallway shaking his hand and saying goodbye I mentioned that I had just started reading, “A Course in Miracles”.  See, from day one you know this is a really different book and I was sort of afraid that he would think I was going down the wrong path with it.  I just wanted to know what he thought.  He said, “Oh, I’m sure you will enjoy it.  I’ve read it three times.”  That was the stamp of approval I needed to move forward with reading, “A Course in Miracles”.  The website is www.acm.org

I Ended Up Growing Up

This is a sort of strange thing that happened.  I was 35 years old when I embarked upon my own psychic awareness journey.  You figure at 35 years old you are grown up.  Well, I discovered it takes courage to do this journey of psychic and spiritual discovery.  How do I feel now some 20 years later?  I feel calmer.  I feel more tolerant of both myself and other people.  I am certainly a lot happier.  I am not so afraid to be myself.  I quit smoking and quit drinking and am on a road to better physical health.  I’m glad I did it.  I couldn’t imagine life without the richness I have now.  Also, it is very, very cool to talk to people like Elvis and George Washington and other such Folk in Spirit.  So, you can also see that there is nothing wrong with the child in me either.

I wish you the best of luck in your own quest.  If you have the intention of doing this all else will follow where it needs to be for you.  It is not quick.  It is a journey that will take the rest of your life.  But, boy is it fun. And, remember that you will learn from each teacher who comes your way.  They all have something of wonder to tell you about.  Myself?  I am still learning.
