Learn About Self Help Books
I want to recommend my friend Thayer White’s books and websites. When I balked
at reaching out for psychological help the universe sent me his friendship. This is another thing that will happen to you. When the student is ready the teacher will appear. Thayer is a psychotherapist and has written two books. The first is, “Be Your Own Therapist”. At the time I was totally resistant to seeing a therapist in the flesh. His book is absolutely fabulous for peole who want to just do it themselves for awhile. He feels people can accomplish a great deal of their emotional and psychological growth on their own and that their therapists are your assistants. Go to: www.psychologyhelp.com/book.htm to read it for free online.
The second book Thayer wrote is, “Finding Your Soul In the Spirituality Maze”. This book helps you to sort out all the different ways of approaching your own spiritual journey. This is also an online book and you can read it for free here: www.helpself.com/new-age Both of these books are available at Amazon.com.
Here are some other books that I used to help me understand and begin to deal with my own emotional and psychological needs:
“Loving What Is” by Byron Katie. You can also visit her website for even more help: www.thework.com
“Healing Your Inner Child” by John Bradshaw. His website is: www.johnbradshaw.com Look there for even more help
Letting Go of Lifelong Held Beliefs and Embracing New Ones
This one is sort of strange. I didn’t know it was going to happen, but it did.
One was about God. I used to think God was in charge. That sort of changed to where we are all in charge. My idea of God was the boss who would blast folk if they weren’t loving and honest and true. That changed too. I still experience a sense of Grace and Spiritual oneness more often than I did before and, to me, that is proof there is a God, a higher self, something more. It is the moment of peace that I allow to enter.
Another idea was that the questing for psychic awareness was a journey just about psychic awareness. Surprisingly, it is also about your own spiritual journey.
I used to believe in Heaven and Hell. Now, it’s just Heaven, or one place instead of two. I learned people make their own places depending upon what their own belief systems are, like murderers who believe they really did bad go to Hell. Once there and having suffered appropriately their own guides come along to help them and suggest there is a different place to go to. In a short space it’s sort of hard to discuss these awesome belief changes, but basically it’s what happened to me.
Also, being dead isn’t so bad. I was terrified of dying and experiencing all this new stuff has shifted me away from that terror.
The idea of me being in a position to help people was also a terrifying burden. Here I had greater access to information that might help folks and I felt an obligation to provide that help. Wrong. What I’ve ended up is with information that might help somebody, but if they are not interested I don’t have to shove it down their throat. If they are interested they will ask me. Simple. Burden removed.
Anyway, maybe you get the idea of some of the shifts I experienced. Likely you will have your own shifts.
There were any number of books I read along the way to help with this shifting point of view. One of them was, “A Course in Miracles”. This is a three part sort of book. There is the part with one lesson a day for students and that is the one I read. I actually only got two thirds of the way through it, but it was enough for my own shift. You will know whether you need to go all the way through or stop abruptly somewhere along the way. There is a second part that is a discussion of the lessons and a third part for teachers. You can buy them in soft back all three bound together or as separate volumes. This is a channeled book and has been translated into many languages. Interestingly enough, after I had
bit the bullet and gone to a therapist to talk about life in general at our last meeting as I stood out in the hallway shaking his hand and saying goodbye I mentioned that I had just started reading, “A Course in Miracles”. See, from day one you know this is a really different book and I was sort of afraid that he would think I was going down the wrong path with it. I just wanted to know what he thought. He said, “Oh, I’m sure you will enjoy it. I’ve read it three times.” That was the stamp of approval I needed to move forward with reading, “A Course in Miracles”. The website is www.acm.org
